どんな植物なの？

The color of indigo blue is produced from
the leaves of an indigo plant.
So what is the indigo plant like?

日本にある藍は
蓼藍（たであい）とも呼ばれ
学名はPolygonum tinctoriumです。
蓼藍にもいくつか種類があります。
私が育てているのは、
白花小上粉と赤花小上粉です。

Japanese indigo plant is annual.
It is called tageai, and
the botanical name is Polygonum tinctorium.
There are several kinds of them.
I have shirobanakojyouko and akabanakojyouko.

いずれも、
種まきは、
3月のお彼岸ごろ。
5月のゴールデンウイーク頃でも育ちました。

かわいい花は、
9月ごろ
穂先に小さな白、またはピンク色の
かわいらしい花をたくさんつけます。

育て方は、
日当たりの良いところで、
ハーブと同じ感覚で楽しむことができますよ。
草丈は60センチから90センチくらい。
挿し木しても旺盛に育ちます。

The time to plant them is around the end of March.
Last year I sewed the seed in May but it grew well.
It has cute white or red flowers in September

It grows well in the sunny places.
It is very easy to take care of like herbs.
The length is about 60 to 90 centimeters.
It can be grown from a cutting.

よ～く似ているのが、
雑草の、「イヌダテ」
あちこちに繁殖しているので、
間違って、育ててしまうことも。
昨年私は間違って大事にしてました！

There is one thing you have to be careful.
A weed called inudate is very similar to this indigo plant.
It can be seen everywhere in Japan.
Last year I made a mistake and grow indigo plant as well as the weed.

その見分け方というか違いは、
葉をちょっと傷つけてみるとわかるんですよ。
次の日にね、
傷ついたところが、藍色になっているのが、
あの愛おしい藍なんです。

There is one big difference between them.
when I made a scratch on the leaves of them by mistake,
I found that the part of the scratch got blue later.

藍にも花言葉って、あるんですよ。
「美しい装い」です。

Indigo plants also have the language of the flower.
