福島県いわき市にいま～す。

藍染用の布と糸を持ってきているので、

時間のある時に、

チクチク。

Now I'm staying in Iwaki, Fukushima prefecture

where my husband lives.

I brought threads and fabric for indigo dyeing with me 

so that I am able to make stitches when I have time.

母が以前染めた帽子も

持ってきました。

絞りの部分、縫い終わりました。


I brought the hat my mother dyed which I planed to re-dye.

Finally I've finished stitching

at the parts of shibori






針と糸を使った絞りの難しい部分は、

縫った後の最後の玉結び。

玉結びをするのですが、

糸を引っ張ると、

糸にゆるみが・・・。

One of the difficult parts of shibori,

which requires the use of thread for binding,

is to tie a knot after the stitches.

I tried to pull on the threads

as hard as I can ,

but

there was still space between the fabric and  the knot.

美しい絞りのためには、

この「ゆるみ」がNG.

ゆるみを無くすために、

何度も、玉止めを繰り返します。


This looseness cause the shibori pattern to be fuzzy

because tying makes resistance when dyeing.

Therefore I tied a knot many times to get rid of looseness.



先生のように、

経験ある人なら、

緩みなく絞れるのにね・・・。

My teacher who has lots of experience with shibori

can easily tie a knot without its becoming loose.






私は、いつそんな風にできるようになるかな。

I wonder when I will be able to do so.

Dyeing indigo blue again もう一度藍色に

ずっと以前に

母からもらった　藍染の帽子。


My mother dyed a hat indigo blue

 and she gave it to me several years ago.

気に入って、

夏の間はよくかぶっていました。

愛用し続け、太陽をしっかり浴びた為か、

藍色が薄くなってきました。


Since then it has been one of my favorite garments

and I often wear it in a sunny place in summer.

After lots of exposure to the sun,

the color of the hat has faded.







絞りの先生から、もう一度帽子を染め直す方法を

教えてもらいました。

絞りの部分は、もう一度正確に針目を縫い、

染めるのです。

縫い方のコツ、難しい～

なんせ、針目なんて残ってないので、

多分ここらあたり、という感覚でしないと・・・。



My shibori teacher told me how to revive the hat:

stitch along the same needle holes exactly for the shibori parts

and dye the hat indigo blue.

This sewing tip for shibori is not easy

because there aren't any holes left.

I have to guess them.







染めることで、もう一度洋服が

生き返るなんて、すごいな～


I'm so impressed

because dyeing gives clothing another life.

この夏、

染めてみたいな、と思って買った

作務衣と浴衣用の生地。

浴衣は夏の着物みたいなもの。

作務衣は、以前はお寺の住職さんが着るものでしたが、

今では、飲食店や芸術家のユニフォームとして

また部屋着として人気があります。

Yukata and Samue,

are the clothes I’ve been wanting to dye for a long time.

Yukata is a summer kimono

and

Samue used to be work clothing for monks but now

it is popular as a uniform in restaurants,

work clothing for artisans and farmers,

and at-home clothes.

どんな絞りにしようか、迷っているうちに

夏が終わってしまいました。

来年の夏までにしあげよう～。

浴衣は仕立てにも時間がかかりますから、

今から取り掛かるのがよさそうです。

I was not able to make up my mind what pattern of shibori to use for them

and it is autumn now.

I'll complete the shibori of Samue and Yukata to by next summer. 

Making shibori for Yukata takes lots of time, so

I should start making stitches now.

そして先日やっと、絞りのイメージが

ひらめきました。

Finally I had a good idea for a pattern of shibori.

先日旅行で行った山形県西川町では、

刈り取った稲が

干されていました。

地域によって干し方が違っているのは

面白いですね。

Harvest time, Fall!

My husband and I visited Nishikawa town in Yamagata.

Yamagata is famous for rice.

When we visited some rice fields,

the rice had already been harvested and hung to dry.

The way of hanging harvested rice depends on an area in Japan,

which is very interesting.

さて、

今私は、山形からずっと南下して

実家の徳島にいます。

そして、

昨日　藍染教室に行ってきました。

Now I went south to Tokushima, my hometown.

And I took a class for aizome dyeing at

Hon Aizome Yano Kojo.

先月染めた、モンベルスカーフと長袖Tシャツ。

モンベルスカーフは帽子絞りで2色のグラデーションで

仕上がってました。

長袖Tシャツは、縫い絞りで絞った糸を外す作業でした。

Last month I dyed two items:

one is a scarf with "Boshi shibori" technique

and the other one is a long sleeved T-shirt with  "Nui shibori" technique.

The scarf has dark and light indigo blue and it's already finished.

I need to remove the stitches in the long sleeed T-shirt.

玉止めした部分を引っ張ると、

染まっていない真っ白な部分が出てくるので、

そこにハサミを入れます。

間違って布を切らないように、

気を付けて・・・・

By pulling the thread knot I saw a bit of the undyed thread.

I made sure I cut the white part of the thread, not the fabric itself.

次は、糸を抜いていきます。

すると、

藍に染まっていない部分が

するすると現れてきます。

藍色と白のコントラストが美しいです！

Next I removed the stitches,

then

the undyed part of the fabric appeared.

The contrast of indigo dyed color and white color is beautiful.

でも喜ぶのはまだ早い！

すぐに次の不安が・・・

模様はうまくできているのかなぁ。

恐る恐る、ひろげると・・・

But it was too early to be happy.

Soon the next anxiety showed up.

"Is the shibori pattern going to show up beautifully?"

Nervously I spreaded the T-shirt out.

不安がすう～と遠のき、

思い描いていた模様が出てきました。

Finally the anxiety disappeared

and the pattern which I had expected showed up.

友達が、

藍染って、いいね　って言ってくれる。

そして、

藍で染めた服が欲しい、とリクエストがありました。

藍染の輪が広がるのが、

嬉しい～

one of my friends asked me to dye clothes for her.

I'd like to widen ｃircle of indigo dyeing loveｒ！　Yes!!

まずは、何に染める？

一緒に無印に立ち寄ると、

いい感じのチュニックを見つけて購入。

そして

私はいわきで購入したチュニックを持って

徳島に帰省。

So

What would you like me to dye?

We went to Muji store and she found a white cotton 100% tunic.

She bought it and I went back to my hometown, Tokushima, with it.

どんな絞りにしようかな。

風呂敷でやってみた「巻き上げ絞り」に決めた。

What shibori is suitabel for the tunic?

Well, I chose "makiage shibori" on it.

絞りは、縫い絞りで

緩やかな曲線で

蔓のイメージ。

This curvy design comes from an image of ivy,

indigo dyed "mont-bell" scarf Boshi shiboriモンベルのスカーフを藍染に 帽子絞り

朝の太陽の光を浴びながら

走るのが好き。

I love running 

with bathing the morning sunshine.

今年11月には

岡山マラソン。

ランニングで知り合ったお友達宅にお泊りして、

一緒に走ります。

とっても楽しみ～。

The Okayama Marathon is going to be held this November.

I've already entered it with my friend who lives in Okayama.

So, I'm going to stay at her house the day before the marathon.

I can't wait to see her again!

お土産に準備しているのが、

藍染のスカーフ。

アウトドア派の彼女のために、

「モンベル」で、スカーフを購入。

それを、

藍色に染めてプレゼント～(^^♪

I’m going to give her an indigo-dyed scarf

in return for her hospitality.

I bought the scarf at the Monbell shop

which has a variety of outdoor goods.

She loves outdoor activities

so I hope she'll love it.

どんな絞りにしようか迷っていたら、

先生が

「帽子絞り」を提案してくれました。

帽子絞り：

紐で縛って、布に染め液がしみこまないように

ビニールでカバーする技術。

My teacher recommended  "Boshi shibori" for the scarf.

Boshi shibori ：

Fabric is tied up with rope and covered with plastic

to prevent the dye penetrating the fabric.
