Fresh Leaves Indigo Dyeing at Home

藍の生葉染め　自宅でやってみた！

準備：

藍の葉っぱ

ブレンダー

桶

シルクの製品　スカーフ、ハンカチ等

洗濯ネット

時間（スカーフ１枚）

１時間ぐらい

染め×酸化×５回

他、染め液を作るのに３０分ほど

Preparation： 

Indigo leaves

silk products such as scarves

laundry net

Duration：

a piece of scarf about 1.5 hour

(dyeing, oxidizing 5 times each and

making dyeing liquid is about 30 minutes)

刈り取りから、染めまでは時間勝負

少しでも時間を節約するため、刈り取りは茎ごと。

私の場合　畑から自宅まで車で２０分かかるんです。
早く移動しないと、しおれちゃう～

To save time I harvested leaves with stems.

In my case it takes 20 minutes by car from my field to my house!

Leaves need to be fresh as much as possible.

葉だけにして、綺麗に洗いま～す

Pick up leaves and wash them well.

スカーフは，事前に洗っておきま～す。

買ったばかりなので、ノリなど落とします。

Wash scarves well in luke water in advance 

becasue they may be startched

ミキサーに葉を水を入れ、攪拌しま～す

バジルペースをを作っているのと一緒だな～

Put leaves and water then mix them well in a blender

I felt like making basil paste・・・

攪拌したものを、

洗濯ネットに入れて、染め液をしっかり、絞りだしま～す。

攪拌、絞りだしを　数回に分けておこないます。

この作業、てきぱきしなければ、すぐに酸化してしまうんです。

酸化（緑色から、黒っぽい色になる）

Pour the mixture into  a laundry net 

then extract indigo liquid by squeezing well into a container.

Repeat this process several times with speed because

indigo leaves get oxidized soon

液は、青汁みたい！

飲んだことないけど・・

濃厚な藍の染め液は、

豊潤な草の香りでいっぱい

 The liquid looks like green juice

I've never tried it though.

The aroma of fresh green indigo plants is fulfilled in the room

染め液の量

スカーフがしっかりと浸るぐらい

染めるとき、スカーフを泳がせるように

ゆらゆらと動かします。

時間は　５分ほど そして絞ります。

The amount of extracted indigo liquid:

quantity which is enough to soak fabric and move it around under the liquid.

Soaking time is about 5 minutes then squeeze the scarf.

浸した後、

広げて空気にさらしま～す。

(空中酸化）

写真は２回目の空中酸化

(水中酸化という方法もあり）

綺麗に染まってきています。

染める、空中酸化を５回繰り返しま～す

After soaking, let the fabric expose to air

(oxidizing in the air)

The picture above is the second oxidizing in the air.

Getting lovely color!

Repeat soaking and oxidizing 5 times each.

生葉染めは、

水の中(水中酸化）という方法もあり、水に浸します。

時間は５分くらい

空気または水に触れることで発色がよくなります。

Another way to oxidize, which is to soak textile in water.

Color well by oxidizing in air or water.

水中酸化の時、水を入れ替えてみたら、

染まった鮮やかなブルーが・・

I changed water once during water-oxidizing

Beautiful blue color came out!

手もどんどん、染まっていきます

液は、どんどん黒く酸化していきます。

My hands turned blue little by little.

The liquid got darker and darker by oxidizing.

最後は、ソフター

バスタオルに挟んで、たたいて

水気をとり、シワをのばします。

乾かしたら、完成。

Ｆabric softener makes silk smooth touch and

Sandwich the scarf between towels to dry

 then pat the surface to smooth out the wrinkles on it.

Gorgeous!

特に初めて洗う時は、心配！

きれいな藍色があせちゃう？

それから

他のものへの色移りするんじゃないか、とか・・・。

Washing.

Ｉ worried about washing indigo dyed textile.

Especially about the color.

For example

Does this brilliant blue color fade away?

Does the indigo color transfer to other fabric?

私の藍染めは、

徳島にある矢野本藍染工場で染めているんです。

こちらは、

「天然灰汁発酵建てによる本藍染め」という技法を使っているので、

化学薬品等を一切使用していません。

手間暇かけて、種からすくも

すくもから染め液へ

世代を超えて守られてきた藍を、

江戸時代から受け継いできた技法を使っているので、

本物なんですよ。

だから、

洗濯で藍が色落ちすることもないし

一緒に洗って他の衣類に色が移ってしまうこともないんです!

なんて、わかっていても、

初めて洗う時は、不安いっぱい！

All of my indigo textile are dyed 

in Yano Honaizome Kojo,Tokushima.

There is a technique called natural indigo dyeing using 

authentic fermentation process and it has been passing down

generation to generation since the Edo period.

The traditional method uses only natural materials and no chemicals.

Therefore no need to worry about color fading nor color migration.

BUT

I was filled with anxiety because it was the first time to wash.

実際、藍の洗濯は思ったよりも簡単。

大切なのは　たった　２つの事。

１．中性洗剤を使う。ブリーチは使わない。

２．陰干し。日焼けするので、太陽の光に当てない。

Actually it was much simpler and easier to handle than I had thought.

There are two important fact:

１．Use neutral detergent

Do not bleach!

２．Drying in shade

Drying under sunshine cause color fading

見てください、この色！

初めて洗った後

びっくり！

この後、白いタオルを洗ってみましたが、

色は全くつきませんでした。

Look at this color!

I was so surprised to see it!

Then I washed a white towel using this water.

It didn't get any color migration.

本藍染矢野工場というところで、藍染を習っています。

そこには、素晴らしい先生方がいらっしゃいます。

矢野藍秀先生は、藍染師であり、

矢野浩邦先生は絞りの達人

そして、ご子息の　矢野藍遊先生です。



Hon Aizome Yano Kojo is the place I learn about indigo dying.

It has classes for aizome, indigo dyeing.


There are three wonderful reliable teachers.

Mr.Ranshu Yano is a master Indigo dyer,

 His wife, Ms.Koho Yano is a specialist for Shibori,

their son, Mr. Ranyu Yano.

2013年ＮＨＫドラマ「八重の桜」のオープニングで使用されました。

Mr. Ranshu Yano created this masterpiece

and it was used for NHK drama 'Yae no Sakura" in 2013

本藍染矢野工場は、江戸時代から受け継がれている

伝統的な染めの技術を使っています。

天然灰汁発酵建てと呼ばれるもので、

自然で本物であるという事を大切にしています。

染料の元である「すくも」は、19代目の藍師佐藤昭人氏製造を使っています。

彼は、矢野浩邦氏のお父様でもあります。

Hon Aizome Yano Kojo uses a traditional dyeing method

which has been passing down since the Edo period.

The technique is called authentic dye-making by natural fermentation.

Natural and authentic is their first priority so they use sukumo

made by Mr. Akihito Sato

who is the 19th generation of a indigo producer.

He is also a father of Ms. Koho Yano.




The sukumo is a natural traditional Japanese dye

made from fermented indigo leaves.

藍染を習うのには多くの場所が徳島県には存在するのですが、

私はラッキーでした。

検索したとき　最初に見つけたのが、

この本藍染矢野工場だったのです。

クラスは月3回で、初心者からベテランさんまで。

生徒はみんな熱心。

楽しい雰囲気です。

藍染の世界はとても深いですが、

どんどんのめり込んでいってます。



There are lots of places to learn indigo dyeing in Tokushima but

How fortunate I was!

Hon Aiome Yano factory was the first result when I googled.


Classes are offered three times a month

from beginners to advanced people.

Students are eager beaver to learn indigo dyeing.

There is a happy wonderful cheerful atmosphere!

Indigo dyeing is a deep world and I'm getting into it with them
